The aim of this workshop is to debate the importance, benefits, and limitations of rigorously assessing software architecture research outcomes by utilizing the methods and approaches from the evidence-based paradigm. The workshop will provide attendees with an opportunity to critically discuss the suitability of different assessment mechanisms, techniques and methods for software architecture discipline. The workshop participants are expected to propose and debate several questions related to the assessment of software architecture technologies.
When: Monday, 18 February 2008, 13:30 – 18:00

An architectural description (AD), serves as the blueprint of a software-intensive system for the project and the teams building it. Just as no system can be successful without the right architecture, no architecture can be successful without clear, concise, useful documentation that serves its many stakeholders in a way that allows them to do their jobs. Surprisingly, there has been almost no work in how to review an architecture description effectively – that is, in a way that uses available resources efficiently and that produces the most actionable results.
The aim of this workshop is to present a framework for reviewing architectural descriptions and solicit community feedback and insights on the practices of architectural description review (ADR). The framework situates reviews within the life cycle, and posits various uses for reviews. The framework introduces the idea of an AD question set as a purpose- and stakeholder-directed unit of an architecture review, and proposes a template for defining question sets.

This workshop will discuss and propose alternatives to measure software architecture complexity based on quality attributes as non-functional requirements such as performance, reliability, and modifiability.
Popular software complexity estimates, like function-points, are focused on the functionality and do not pay enough attention to complexity imposed to fulfill the severe quality requirements of some modern projects.
The participants will be encouraged to analyse different implications of architecture and quality attributes on software development efforts and risks.
The goal of this workshop is to produce insights to encourage further research and future methods that consider quality attributes on software complexity metrics.
