Tutorial Proposals

IMPORTANT DATES

Submission: June 10, 2005
Notification of Acceptance: July 8, 2005 Camera-ready copy due: September 1, 2005

GOAL

WICSA-05 will offer a small number of high calibre, half and full-day tutorials on topics that are of keen interest to the WICSA-05 audience. The tutorials will be part of a program designed to provide appeal to architects in industry, as well as researchers investigating this field.

SCOPE

We are soliciting proposals for full-day (6-hour) or half-day (3-hour) tutorials. We encourage tutorials that reflect the conference themes and provide clear utility to practitioners. For example, tutorials may address topics related to architecture, such as architectural mechanisms and architectural patterns, or the process of architecting, such as architecture modeling techniques, or the role of the architect, such as responsibilities and skills.

Tutorials are intended to provide independent instruction on a topic of relevance to software architects. Therefore no commercial or sales-oriented presentations will be accepted. Potential presenters should keep in mind that there may be quite a varied audience, including novice graduate students, seasoned practitioners, and specialised researchers. They should be prepared to cope with this diversity unless they make clear that the tutorial is oriented to a particular subgroup. Also bear in mind that not everyone will have English as their first language. Thus, presenters should provide comprehensive notes written in clear, standard English. Idioms, irony, slang and culture-specific references should be avoided as far as possible.

EVALUATION

The tutorials committee will review each proposal and will select quality proposals that fit the WICSA-05 program and objectives. Each tutorial proposal will be evaluated on its anticipated benefit for prospective participants and its fit within the tutorial program as a whole. Factors to be considered also include: relevance, timeliness, importance, and audience appeal; suitability for presentation in a half- or full-day tutorial format; effectiveness of teaching methods; and past experience and qualifications of the instructors.

SUBMISSION

Tutorial proposals must conform to the proposal template. Together with the proposal, three sample slides from the intended tutorial presentation must be submitted.

The proposal as well as the sample slides must be submitted in PDF, with all fonts included. Proposals not conforming to these instructions will not be considered. Your submission must be clearly marked "WICSA-05 Tutorial Submission", as must any email relating to your submission.

TUTORIAL PROPOSAL TEMPLATE

A tutorial proposal should contain the following information:
- Abstract: A brief description of the tutorial (Max: 150 words)
- Target audience: A brief description of the target audience, including any prerequisite knowledge required in order to attend the tutorial (Max: 75 words)
- The objectives of the tutorial
- A detailed outline of the topics to be presented. Indicate whether this is intended to be a half-day or full day tutorial.
- A brief presenter(s) bio should be included. Please include name, postal address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and personal webpage.

REIMBURSEMENT

Details about reimbursement will be forthcoming and will follow IEEE guidelines.

WICSA-05 reserves the right to cancel any tutorial if deadlines are missed or if too few attendees register for the tutorial to support the costs of running the tutorial.
